Arkansas Portfolio: Twenty Years of Wilderness Photography

Author: Tim Ernst
Average review score:

Awesome photos!
Unlike the famous areas of the West, Arkansas has very few great vistas from which to photograph. The views here are smaller, more subtle. Tim Ernst has captured many great images of Arkansas, from the well-known parks and views to the wilderness areas that few have seen. This is a must book for anyone who loves photograpy.

The Arkansas: An American River

Excellent color photographs in this large format book
From the cover description: The Arkansas River begins in the melting snows of the Mosquito Range, near Leadville, CO. Before it reaches the Mississippi in southeast Arkansas, it passes from mountains through plains, prairies, hardwood forests, cities, and cypress swamps. The 151 color photos illuminate the authors journey down the river's course. The informative and provocative text is replete with both poetic style and ecological awareness. Environmentalists, outdoor recreationists, or anyone who has ever lived beside or loved a great river will enjoy this passionate tale of the Arkansas.

At Every Wedding Someone Stays Home: Poems (Arkansas Poetry Award Series)

Each poem is a puzzle; the answers make you think for hours
I stumbled across Mrs. Powell's book of poetry two years ago when I was looking for some refreshing poetry. I read a couple of poems in the bookstore and decided to buy this book. The powerfulness of her poetry and her insightfulness didn't hit me until I read through the entire book at home. Her language choice, use of imagery, intelligence and style are unique and refreshing. Her poems are neither vulgar nor profane. These poems will give you hours of quiet reflection or hours of debate with your friends. Do you think you understand what the poem is about? Re-read it again and pay careful attention to the title of the poem or the language used; you'll realize that you probably missed the full meaning of the poem the first time around. I cannot wait for her next book of poetry. Buy this book to find out why!

Great Home Style Cooking with wonderful pictures as a bonus
Being from Arkansas, naturally I was drawn to this book. I also collect cookbooks so I have learned to weed out the ones that tend to be too extravagant for my everyday meals. This cookbook has all the wonderful, Southern-style, home-made recipes I grew up enjoying. It is a compilation of the best recipes from fifty-four different cookbooks from my home state. Historic pictures and interesting tid-bits about Arkansas are scattered through out this collection of tried and true recipes. I know I will enjoy using this cookbook for many years to come and it has already become one of my favorites when I am looking for something yummy to cook!

Bitters in the Honey: Tales of Hope and Disappointment Across Divides of Race and Time
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Arkansas Pr (October, 1999)
Author: Beth Roy
Average review score:

A Change is Gonna Come
Those seriously interested in eliminating racism and making our society representative of it's famous constitutional creed, must read Beth Roy's "Bitters in the Honey." Roy interviews several adults, black and white, who were students at Central High School-Little Rock, Ark. during the school desegration of 1957-58. Roy clearly points out how the priviledged white students perceived the move towards equality as infringing on their rights, thus making them victims. While the nine black students-the true victims-, the martyrs for positive change, had to withstand constant harassment and acts of violence by angry white students. Even more pathetic, Roy describes how the white students blame the monumental court decision for them not reaching their expected goals in life. Blame, responsibility, guilt, denial are common themes expressed by the white adults, who unknowingly had the power to affect change that would in turn, empower everyone. This book should be on the Oprah Book List, because until serious discussion about race relations is undertaken between people, there will continue to be two victims: the hater and the hated. And this society will continue to weaken from divisiveness.

Busy Bodies: A Claire Malloy Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (June, 1995)
Author: Joan Hess
Average review score:

All is well--Claire Malloy is in town!l
Miss Emily and her basset hounds, Nick and Nora, have gotten Claire into trouble before (Roll Over and Play Dead and Dear Miss Demeanor) and are not totally innocent bystanders when it happens again. Claire, daughter Caron, and Caron's chum Inez comprise the trio which manages to run amuck on Willow Street--to the expressed displeasure of Lieutenant Peter Rosen. Peter, an employee of the local homicide division of the police department, is Claire's ardent lover and friend. In the past he has made many vehement objections to her forays into the areas of his expertise and, on occasion, has had her arrested to keep her from the fray. This time a famous painter, a nearly-naked neighbor, a writer, promoter, lawyer, two missionaries, and a soon-to-be-dead-wife all contrive to upset the tea party and give Peter ample reason to complain. If you, too, want to discover why the fire department arrives, what makes Miss Parchester say, "Could it be related in some way to the bears I saw in my backyard?", and who kills the second victim, you will have to read the latest and very funny Joan Hess mystery starring Claire Malloy--Busy Bodies.
